Using your hands to communicate better with yourself?
Communicating with yourself, with your hands. Sometimes it helps to literally use the other hand. For example: try writing with your non-dominant hand. A surprisingly simple exercise that can help you connect more deeply with what is going on inside — precisely those things that often stay beneath the surface.
I also use this exercise in my practice. It opens the door to an inner dialogue. Here is an example from one of my own writing exercises:
“If I were to write a book, what would it be about?”
asks my Right Hand to my Left Hand.
“About love. About universal love, including the love for yourself,” Left replies.
“And what would that book look like?”
(Right knows that Left feels most at home and at ease in the language of images.)
“With lots of beautiful pictures, like what you see now — the shadow on that lovely wall...
(Left takes a moment before continuing)
...something you can move along with, like you’re flowing with the shadow.”
“Oh, really?” Right responds, curiously.
“And if we then look at that shadow on the wall, what might it tell us? What are we invited to move along with?”
L: “It’s about BEING. About what you feel, about what is true.”
R: “What is true?”
L: “That which you feel.”
R: “Ah ha, of course.”
“Yes, very natural... That way, there can be more light,” says L, with a gentle, rounded voice.
“Precisely because the shadow is visible…”
(L looks lovingly at the dancing shadow.)
“Thank you, my left side,” I say.
I’m really curious about your story,
because I feel you so close right now…
actually, most of all in my heart!
Does writing sometimes feel like a lonely or difficult process?
